Background of the Study
Semantic flexibility in political discourse reflects the adaptive use of language to convey nuanced meanings. In Nigerian political interviews, semantic shifts can be observed when comparing urban and rural speakers. Urban politicians often employ flexible language to resonate with cosmopolitan audiences, using metaphors and euphemisms to navigate complex issues. In contrast, rural speakers tend to rely on more direct and culturally grounded expressions that reflect local realities (Okoro, 2023). This study examines the varying degrees of semantic flexibility in political interviews, highlighting how linguistic choices adapt to different audience expectations. Comparative analysis reveals that urban speakers might leverage broader semantic fields to address diverse topics, while rural speakers prioritize clarity and traditional references. Recent research underscores the importance of semantic adaptability in fostering political engagement and public trust (Adewale, 2024). By analyzing recorded interviews, this study seeks to identify the specific linguistic devices employed by both groups and evaluate their effectiveness in political persuasion. The findings are expected to contribute to the understanding of how semantic flexibility functions as a strategic tool in political communication, ultimately bridging ideological divides and enhancing voter connection (Okoro, 2023; Adewale, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
There is a paucity of research focusing on the role of semantic flexibility in Nigerian political interviews, especially regarding the contrast between urban and rural discourse. While political language has been studied extensively, the specific mechanisms through which speakers adapt their semantics to suit audience expectations remain underexplored. This lack of focused research hinders a comprehensive understanding of how nuanced language strategies contribute to effective political communication. Urban and rural contexts present unique challenges and opportunities for semantic expression, and the failure to analyze these differences may lead to an incomplete picture of political discourse dynamics. This study seeks to address these issues by systematically comparing semantic flexibility across different sociocultural settings, thereby illuminating its role in political persuasion and public engagement (Okoro, 2023; Adewale, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze semantic flexibility in Nigerian political interviews.

  2. To compare linguistic adaptations between urban and rural speakers.

  3. To evaluate the impact of semantic strategies on audience engagement.

Research Questions

  1. How is semantic flexibility manifested in political interviews?

  2. What are the differences in semantic strategies between urban and rural speakers?

  3. How do these strategies influence audience perception and engagement?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant for revealing how semantic flexibility underpins effective political communication in Nigeria. By contrasting urban and rural approaches, it offers valuable insights for political strategists, linguists, and communication experts. The research will inform policy development, enhance media training programs, and contribute to academic debates on language use in politics (Okoro, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing semantic flexibility in Nigerian political interviews and does not cover other forms of political discourse.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Semantic Flexibility: The capacity to adapt meaning based on context.

  2. Political Interviews: Dialogues between politicians and media representatives.

  3. Urban and Rural Speakers: Politicians representing metropolitan and regional constituencies.
